Look Outside v2.3

Companion

Ernest

Last checked 2026-11-03

Ernest is a beggar on Floor 1 with his cat, Colonel Squeakums. A temporary recruit needs one companion or fewer, plus a sandwich. The permanent recruit is the Rat Hell quest after you have reached the ground floor. He can be kidnapped. The wiki says you can still get him back.

Songs, a crown, and a cat that bites last

Level 4, 135 HP, 3 attack. The songs are the kit: Rousing Song, Song of Defense, Serenade, Song of Strength, Song of Willpower, and Double Time. Colonel Squeakums attacks at the end of the turn. I list the names because they are the reason a support slot exists. I do not have per-song percentages from a second source, so the names stand without made-up magnitudes.

The Rusty Crown is part of the Rat Hell thread. I will not describe every room of that hell. The permanent flag is “progress the quest,” and the temporary flag is “sandwich, small party, hideout.” Mixing them is how a one-day helper gets written up as a full recruit.

Searches about a rat suit from Ernest belong to this quest’s gear, not to the Rat Child’s body. The child is apartment 13. Ernest’s hideout is Floor 1, and the hell comes later. Three rat nouns, three pages.

Version notes mention Ernest adjustments in the April and May 2025 patches. I am not reconstructing those balance numbers. The current sheet is the 2.3 row above.

Rousing Song, Song of Defense, Serenade, Song of Strength, Song of Willpower, and Double Time are support names, not a damage ranking. The Rusty Crown belongs to Rat Hell. The sandwich belongs to the hideout. I will not swap those costs.

Questions

Can you save Ernest?

The quest continues after he is taken to Rat Hell. Permanent recruitment is that quest, after the ground floor.

What does the temporary join need?

One companion or fewer, and a sandwich, at the Floor 1 hideout.
